In response to the war in Gaza, a large group of people stormed the Makhachkala airport in the Russian region, suspending all flights to and from the facility. The crowd of protesters broke past security, with some even making it onto the runway. In response, the interior ministry of Russia identified 150 active participants and arrested 60 of them. Nine police officers were injured in the process. Social media footage showed scared passengers trying to re-enter the plane, and protesters chanting anti-Jewish slogans. The airliner in question belonged to Russian carrier Red Wings. Photos and videos of people waiting outside the airport and trying to topple over a patrol truck were also seen on local Telegram channels.

The incident came as Israel continued its ground operations and aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip, with officials in Gaza saying more than 8,000 Palestinians, including 3,324 children, have been killed since the war began. On the other hand, Israel has reported 1,400 Israelis and foreign nationals killed in the Hamas attack. In response, the Israeli Prime Minister's office called for Russian law enforcement to protect Israeli citizens and Jews. Additionally, a Jewish centre in the city of Nalchik was set on fire, and Israeli passengers were isolated and guarded at Makhachkala airport.

Russia's civilian aviation agency reported that the airfield had been cleared and would remain closed to incoming aircraft until November 6. Meanwhile, the regional government in Dagestan appealed to citizens to remain calm and not take part in such protests. The Supreme Mufti of Dagestan also called on residents to stop the unrest at the airport. Finally, the White House National Security Council condemned the incident and said the United States stands with the entire Jewish community in the face of a surge in antisemitism.
