Brock Purdy Faces Decision-Making Challenges After Tough Loss

In the 49ers' recent 33-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Brock Purdy's unwavering will to win was evident, but it came at a cost. While his determination is generally an asset, Purdy now finds himself needing to refine his decision-making skills.

Purdy, who is not known for multiple interceptions, surprisingly threw four in the loss, with the third interception being particularly questionable. During the play, penalty flags were already scattered on the field when Purdy attempted a pass to tight end George Kittle, resulting in an interception by Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton.

Reflecting on the play, Purdy admitted, “I saw some flags thrown as I was scrambling. Not exactly sure of what or who it was on, and so my mind was trying to make a play. And honestly, I can't make a bad play worse. I have to know that. For me to throw across my body back in the middle of the field with a guy on George, that's very dumb of me. So, I’ve got to throw the ball away and live to fight another play, and punt and be willing to punt. So, that's something I have to learn from the hard way.”

In the heat of the moment, Purdy's eagerness to rectify his earlier mistakes influenced his decision-making. Despite the 49ers being only five points behind at the time with plenty of game left, Purdy acknowledges the importance of recognizing when to push for a play and when to exercise caution.

He acknowledges that the pressure to make up for errors is a challenge, stating, “I think it's easier to do when you don't have that many turnovers going on, or the game is a close game. But when things are in my mind off, all right, you've messed up a couple times, I have to find a way to make a play. That's where I think I have to grow and be willing. Like I said, a bad play happens, throw the ball away, punt the ball, the game's still manageable to come back. Those are things I have to get better at and understand.”

With the 49ers facing a short week and heading back to the East Coast to play the Washington Commanders on New Year's Eve, Purdy has a quick opportunity to bounce back and showcase improved decision-making on the field.
