Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton is in intensive care with pneumonia

Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton is currently in intensive care due to pneumonia, according to The Associated Press. Retton, who won the all-around gold at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, is being treated at a hospital in her home state of West Virginia.



Retton's agent, Sheryl Shade, released a statement on October 10th saying that Retton was admitted to the hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing. She was then diagnosed with pneumonia, and is currently in intensive care.



Retton is a five-time Olympic medalist, and was the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal. She also won two silver medals and two bronze medals in the 1984 Olympics. Retton has been inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and the US Olympic Hall of Fame.



Retton currently serves as a motivational speaker and is a spokesperson for several companies. She also serves on the board of directors of the Women's Sports Foundation, which was founded by Billie Jean King.



Retton's friends, family, and fans are sending their well-wishes and prayers to her as she recovers from pneumonia. Her agent has asked for privacy for the Retton family during this difficult time.
